Learning objectives
The aim of this course is to provide theoretical knowledge about characteristics of different packaging materials and types of packaging. An introduction to production and application of packaging materials in the process of food and drink packing. Studying the interaction between packaging materials and food products. Care for the environment by using adequate packaging materials.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of attending lectures and passing the exam, student should be enabled for autonomous work in application of contemporary packaging materials in the processes of packing various food products. Also, this course should provide basis for participation in designing and production of various types of packaging.
Content
Definition of packaging, packaging materials and packing. Functions of packaging - protection, storage, sale, usage. Division of packaging. Metal packaging - production and types, shapes and corrosion. Glass packaging - glass properties, production, glass packaging assortment. Plastic packaging - types of plastic used for packaging materials. Shapes and characteristics of wooden and textile packaging. Interaction between packaging and contents. Packaging systems. Modern food packaging conditions in modified and inert atmosphere. Edible and intelligent packaging. Palettes and their stocking - warehouses and containers. Packaging and protection of the environment.
