Faculty of Philology
The Faculty of Philology was established in 2009, when the languages study programmes separated from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Banja Luka. The Faculty is constantly advancing teaching and scientific processes and is organised at the highest scientific and academic level, to protect and study national linguistic, literary and cultural values. In addition, the Faculty’s study programmes of the most significant languages, literatures and cultures of the world make it part of the broadest international context of science and education. At the University of Banja Luka, Philology has achieved significant and visible results. Most notably, the Faculty has established all three study cycles (undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies), provided an exceptional environment and preconditions for research activities (a library, scientific publications and databases, scientific conferences), and carried out international and inter-university cooperation. The most significant result of academic work at the Faculty of Philology are the generations of graduates of Serbian, English, German, Italian, French and Russian languages and literatures. The results are also visible in numerous scientific conferences hosted regularly at the Faculty, in independent and multi-faceted publishing activities, as well as in cooperation with numerous European universities.
Through regional and European projects, the students and staff of the Faculty of Philology have the opportunity to obtain scholarships, carry out mobility, study trips and training at partner universities and faculties. These opportunities are very significant for the Faculty, but at the same time very available, primarily due to the knowledge and study of the world’s languages, literatures and cultures. Graduates of the Faculty of Philology are nominally primarily teachers of Serbian, English, German, Italian, French or Russian languages and literatures, but their employment options are exceptionally broad. In the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina, they hold important and responsible positions in various aspects of society, from education and culture, through science and research, to management and politics.
The Faculty of Philology also hosts the “Đura Jakšić” gallery, with regular exhibits and ample artistic inventory. The Faculty has a diverse publishing practice. One of its major publications is the Philologist, a magazine on language, literature and culture. The Faculty regularly hosts scientific conferences, such as the Philologia Serbica (in Serbian studies) and the CELLS – Conference on English language and literary studies. The Library of the Faculty of Philology was established in 2016 and is located within the Fourth Pavilion of the “Nikola Tesla” student dormitory. Now, the Library’s inventory lists over 20 000 books (scientific monographs, manuals, textbooks, dictionaries, lexicon, old and rare books, domestic and foreign literature, as well as literary studies).
The Faculty of Philology runs the Centre for Languages and Translation, and offers foreign language courses not only to students, but to anyone who is interested. The Faculty regularly hosts visiting lecturers, literary and linguistic seminars, literary panels and other scientific and art events.
The Faculty of Philology strives towards continuous development of the existing academic and research capacities, to pass on to future generations a functional, nationally responsible, and internationally recognized and networked system of philological studies.
