Faculty of Forestry Joins a Project under the Interreg Danube Region Programme

General

The Faculty of Forestry at the University of Banja Luka is part of an international project under the Interreg Danube Region Programme titled “Strategies for Conservation of Narrow-Leaved Ash Populations (Fraxinus angustifolia) in the Danube Basin – SCAN-DANUBE,” which officially commenced implementation on 1 April 2025.

The consortium behind this significant project comprises six institutions: Mendel University in Brno as the project coordinator, BFW (Austrian forestry institute in Vienna), the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Banja Luka, the Institute of Lowland Forestry and Environment in Novi Sad, the Slovenian Forestry Institute in Ljubljana, and the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology in Zagreb.

The project will last for three years, until 2028, covering various aspects of the protection and improvement of narrow-leaved ash in the Danube region. Three specific objectives and 12 activities have been defined, all of which will include the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Banja Luka.

Notably, the Faculty of Forestry is the coordinator of Activity A2.2 – “Key Prerequisites for the Conservation of Narrow-Leaved Ash Reproductive Potential”, contributing to the acquisition of new knowledge on this species and possibilities for its optimal management, protection, and sustainable use in the region.

The implementation of the project will lead to the development of action plans and proposals of solutions for specific identified issues, ensuring the long-term sustainability and preservation of narrow-leaved ash in the Danube region.
