University condemns political persecution of the highest officials of the Republic of Srpska
Sjednice senataGeneralThe Senate of the University of Banja Luka, in its 115th session held on 27 March 2025, issued the following Communique:
The University of Banja Luka, the largest scientific institution in the Republic of Srpska, follows with deep concern the latest attempts to criminalize the elected political representatives of the Republic of Srpska, which is a serious blow to principles of justice, rule of law, and democratic values.
We particularly condemn the attempt to destabilize the Republic of Srpska through political persecution of the President of the Republic of Srpska, Milorad Dodik, as it represents a dangerous step towards ruining the foundation of democratic institutions, principles of the rule of law and blunt violation of human rights. These actions are not only inadmissible in a democratic community, but they cause large damage to the stability and peaceful development of our society, questioning the basic principles of justice, constitutionality, and freedom.
In these difficult times, when the stability and development of the Republic of Srpska are being tested at all times, we invite the relevant institutions, social actors, and political representatives to act responsibly and abstain from any political moves that might undermine the reputation of our highest representatives and jeopardize the stability and future of the Republic of Srpska. Respecting legal frames and institutional mechanisms is key to preserving the dignity and stability of all institutions of the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Here, we must strongly underline that responsible acting is necessary to maintain peace, security, and advancement in all aspects of our society.
On that account, we hereby draw the attention of the Peace Implementation Council Steering Board (PIC SB), which appointed Christian Schmidt, as the so-called High Representative to BiH, contrary to regulations of Annex 10 of the Dayton Peace Accord and without the consent of the UN Security Council, thus sharing the accountability for his actions and their impact on peace, stability and future relations among the peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Lastly, we would like to emphasize that the University of Banja Luka remains dedicated to its basic purpose – to continue working on educating new generations, improving scientific research and developing higher education, and act as the pillar of social dialogue, exchange of ideas, and critical thought in the service of general good. As an institution of strategic importance, the University shall continue to support stability, democracy, and development of the Republic of Srpska, fully dedicated to principles of truth, justice, and accountability.
