The Academic Rade Mihaljcic Passed Away

The prominent Serbian historian, the academic Rade Mihaljcic, professor emeritus of the University of Banja Luka and full member of the Republika Srpska Academy of Sciences and Arts, passed away on 26 March 2020 in Belgrade at the age of 83.

He was born on 21 January 1937 in Srednji Jurkovici near Gradiska. As a boy, he was taken to the Jasenovac camp, in which he lost his parents and closest relatives. He completed his primary school in Sisak and Kotor Varos, and secondary school in Banja Luka. He graduated in History from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade in 1960, at which he obtained his master’s degree in 1965 and doctor’s degree in 1971. In 1966 and 1967 he spent three months in France, specializing under the mentorship of the well-known historian Georges Duby, and seven months in Greece. At the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, he started his career as an assistant professor and was appointed full professor in 1984. He was also a full professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Banja Luka, and in 2009 he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the University of Banja Luka. 

He was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Republika Srpska on 21 June 2004, and a full member on 5 September 2008.

The academic Mihaljcic is the author of many works, the most significant of which are: ’The Fall of the Serbian Empire’, ’Lazar Hrebeljanovic - History, Cult, Tradition’, ’Heroes of the Kosovo Legends’, ’Serbian Past and People's Remembrance’, ’Original Value of Old Serbian Material’, ,,Titles of Regional Lieges’’ and ’Laws in Old Serbian Documents: Legislations, Translations, Introductory Texts and Explanations’.
