Great Success of the Students of the Faculty of Medicine

A group of five students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Banja Luka won the fifth place at the prestigious International Medical Tournament in Russia.

The students Sonja Ukmar, Pavle Karan, Nikola Vranjes, Marko Vujmilovic and Dinko Osmancevic made this result under the mentoring of Dr Vlastimir Vlatkovic, associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Banja Luka and nephrologist at the Universty Clinical Centre of the Republic of Srpska.

One of the participants in this tournament, the student Dinko Osmancevic, says that cases they were given to solve were such that specialists would deal with, which are very difficult for students to handle.

''We had to seek help from the doctors at the Clinical Centre. We were required to offer a six-pages long solution, give a presentation and defend our views. Twice we competed with the Germans, who were extraordinary'', said Osmancevic for the daily ''Oslobodjenje''.

He was tasked to solve the Liddle syndrome. This is a very rare disease which is difficult to diagnose.
''Because it is so rare, one would never think of it before it matched with the clinical features. None of the doctors could tell me that, as it did not cross their minds. I found it in the literature, I saw it matched with the clinical features and pointed to it'', he shared his experience.

Osmancevic says that the aim of the competition is not to give a definite diagnosis, but to see how widely someone is able to think and consider things and how it can be supported by literature, it reads in the „Oslobodjenje“ '.

Participation of the students in this tournament was supported by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Banja Luka and City of Banja Luka.
